Australia, it's about time I wrote something...
By kevin on 16 November 2010
I've been here for 2 months and haven't taken a photo or written down a note. Mostly because I've haven't done anything, I like to blame the weather for that. We've got a couple days of sun before the next onslaught of rain, so I was looking for something to do and while I was searching for things to do in Melby, I found some helpful advice:
I was looking at going to the zoo on Fri/Sat, then I saw the $25 price tag and reconsidered. While I was researching I came across some great advice for things to do in Melbourne
"If you are after a unique dining experience, why don't you try Hard Rock Cafe http://www.hardrockcafe.com.au and T.G.I . Fridays http://www.tgifridays.com.au"
Hahahaha, sounds awesome, that's what people come to Australia for. Hmmmmm what else, I really only wrote this post, to put that quote up....
Well I've been Kanji'ng a lots lately, though I'm only half way through, I seem to be learning them more quickly than before, I was over studying them before, not allowing for more space between repetitions. I picked up a whole mess of language exchange partners lately. I had 4, lost one, gained another today (kinda like Jerry), so I've got one almost every day of the week. It's so easy to find them out here, but back home it was impossible. I'm learning tons, I finally found a partner who's English is worse than my Japanese, which is really good. All our chit chat is in Japanese, so not only is it a huge confidence boost, but I get a whole lot of practice. I can practice the same thing with each of them until I get it right, without feeling like I'm boring them to death with my incredibly exciting conversations about making plans or calling in late, or discussing future weather. Speaking of boring, this post is tops on the sleeper list, eh?
I live with 2 Chinese couples and one Burmese girl right now. Asians do things well different than whitey's. In some attempt at reducing possible friction within the household, we all have our own everything. Strange sentence? For example, we have 4 bottles of dishwashing soap on the counter, 4 rolls of toilet paper, 4 sets of cookware, 4 sets of silverware, 4 sets of cups, plates and bowls, 4 containers of milk, 4 butters, 4 soy sauces, 4 rice cookers, 4 knives, 4 laundry drying racks, the list goes on and on. It does cause less friction for sure, and it's probably a better way to live, though I do feel it's a bit isolationist. It's like each group/person lives their own independent lives and it's more like we have separate apartments and a shared kitchen, than living in a house together. I hang out in the common room a lot as I hate being in my room by myself, and I'm definitely the weird one. I do like it, but it feels a bit lonely, and I'd like to have somebody to hang out with in the family room, but nobody wants to spend too much time with Whitey, even if it's a free opportunity to practice English. Sigh.....
Hmm, what else, Hayden seems a bit better than before, Mio is finished for the semester so she's out job hunting.... yep that's all my friends, sad sad.
